DDoS Attacks How They Work and How to Defend Against Them

EndTech blog
DDoS, or Distributed Denial of Service, is an attack where hackers try to block a website, online store, or other service from working. They do this by sending a massive amount of requests from many different computers in a short period of time. It’s like that crowd in the store, made up of hundreds or even thousands of people.
Imagine you’re going to a store, and there’s a crowd of people standing in the doorway, not wanting to buy anything, just blocking the entrance. No one else can get inside. That’s what a DDoS attack is like on the internet.

How does it work?

Hackers first “infect” many computers with a special program that turns them into “zombies.” These computers, called a botnet, start sending a huge number of requests to the “victim,” like a website, on the hacker’s command. The server that runs the website can’t handle so many requests and stops working. Then no one can access the site, make purchases, or use the service.

Why DDoS is so dangerous?

DDoS attacks can cause many problems. Companies lose money because customers can’t use their services. Users can’t access important information, and sometimes entire networks stop working. It can be very frustrating and costly.

How to defend yourself?

Luckily, there are ways to protect yourself from DDoS attacks. It’s a bit like building a wall around the store so that the crowd can’t get inside. Here are a few examples:

  • Strong passwords: Use passwords that are hard to guess for your online accounts. This is the foundation of security.
Updates: Regularly update the software on your computer and phone. This patches holes through which hackers can break in.
  • Antivirus software: Install antivirus software and regularly scan your computer with it. It’s like having a security guard who makes sure that no unauthorized person enters the store.
  • Firewall: Turn on your firewall, which is like a “wall” that protects your computer from outside attacks.
  • Anti-DDoS services: If you have your own website, use the services of companies that offer protection against DDoS attacks. It’s like hiring special security to fend off attacks.
